Mini split systems take the concept of a split system – which includes a set of components outside the house and another set of components inside – and expands it. The result is more precise climate control in more locations and happier family members, who don’t have to fight over thermostat settings anymore.
A true mini split system includes a condenser coil/compressor, which sits outside on a slab, landing, or flat roof, and one or more air handler/evaporator coil sets. Each air handler is assigned a room – or zone – and acts independently of the other air handlers. Each air handler is controlled by its own thermostat, making it possible for separate rooms to have their own individual settings.
If you live in an area where the winters are not particularly harsh, you can cover both cooling and heating needs with a Fujitsu mini split heat pump. A heat pump is an air conditioner that has the capability of running the AC process in reverse. With this system, heat is pulled FROM the house in the summer and delivered TO the house in the winter. Typically, heat pumps lose efficiency at exterior temperatures below 35° F, but even then, you can compensate with electric heater coils on some models.
Another big plus for the mini split concept is the ease with which the units are installed. A Fujitsu ductless mini split system installs without having to be connected to ductwork. Ductwork is bypassed if you’re replacing a traditional AC system, or the ductwork never even comes into the equation if you’re building new.
The key to achieving ultimate comfort lies in matching your system to your home. Our air handlers range in capacity from 7,000 BTUs to 24,000 BTUs, and our condensing units range in capacity from 9,000 BTUs to 24,000 BTUs. Essentially, the larger the room, the greater the BTUs should be. Other factors play into the equation, such as the quality and quantity of insulation, the presence of windows, the height of the ceilings, and the size of the openings between rooms.
Ideally, you should consult one of our well-trained customer service reps for sizing your mini split system, but we provide plenty of information to help you make an informed decision. On the main page, you will notice a column of numbers that looks like math homework. These represent the number of air handlers in each system and their respective capacities.
For example, 7+12+18 means there are three air handlers included in the system: one with a 7,000 BTU capacity, one rated at 12,000 BTUs and one rated at 18,000 BTUs. Under normal conditions, this would cover a small room, a small/medium room and a medium/large room. The corresponding condenser component (the outside part) would have a BTU capacity slightly less than the combined BTUs of the air handlers. This ensures the most efficient use of energy and the best possible performance in terms of temperature modulation and humidity abatement
